The gentleman (basically someone who is free) is often a scholar. He has an interest in the world and time to indulge his hobbies.
The entire point of the Gentleman is that he belongs to no one. This means that he does not work purely for money but because he has a vocation. Very often he is the only one who can afford to tell the truth because he does not fear dismissal.
